Work to a listed building needs a more careful application, because the council has to consider the building's special architectural or historic interest. We prepare measured drawings, existing and proposed plans and application information for suitable listed building projects across Dorset.
A listed building application has to make the existing condition and the proposed work easy to understand. Depending on the work, that can mean existing and proposed elevations, floor plans, roof plans, sections and detailed notes on materials or areas of change.
Our service suits drawing-led applications where the work can be clearly recorded and explained, including some repairs, roof works and alterations. Like-for-like repair or replacement can still need consent. A new element that looks the same as the old one doesn't automatically fall outside listed building control, so check before work starts.
Some straightforward applications only need proportionate information explaining the work and its context. Others need a formal assessment of significance, a heritage impact assessment or a specialist conservation method.

They're separate controls, and some projects need both. The route depends on the work and the property. Starting unauthorised work on a listed building can have serious legal consequences, so establish what consent you need before building work begins.
We survey the existing building for measured drawing purposes within the agreed scope, so the existing drawings show the building as it stands before any change is proposed.
